There was a time while living outside of the city when I could drive downtown a day before Christmas and spend the most relaxing time, parusing the wonderful displays between Eatons and the Bay.
Christmas Street, a full floor of the Bay dedicated to the season was illuminated by every style of tree; alcoves were alive with life-size stuffed animals and toys; a magical place for kids to get lost.
While living downtown for several years, the Bay's food store was crucial for groceries. Other than Fredette's high price market the Bay was the only pedestrian option. Most people living between Assiniboine and Ellice depended on them too.
The myth that consumers decide what is to be bought or sold is evident when needs are not met. Maybe we do not need the wow of Christmas Steet but a food store should be priority.
The pre-packaged frozen food sold at Zellers will not replace the need for turkeys at Christmas.
