You learn when you are hungry, reaching, grabbing for food.  What's hot, what's easy to catch.  When you are motivated you learn about the road. 

Travelling sometimes without steering forgetting to pull-over when exhaust sets in, the motivated driver/worker becomes dangerous.

The good manager questions the amount of work the employees are doing and cares for the motive and specificness of the employees' job.
