We all procrastinate; it's fairly easy to come up with an excuse to put something off  just a little longer. There are four main reasons why people procrastinate. The first reason is related to fear.  Fear of what will happen, fear of doing it wrong, fear of rejection, or even fear of failure. Another reason could be that you have set a "should" goal, meaning it's something you think you should do, but deep down it's really not something that you want to do and you aren't passionate about. Not having a set strategy can also make you drag your feet, so you then do nothing. Or you might have things that are a higher priority and maybe even feel overwhelmed with all that you have set out to do. While a certain task or activity might be important, other things might keep getting in the way of getting it completed.

But have you noticed that the longer you put off a goal the harder it seems to achieve? For example, maybe you are starting a new business and calling on potential clients seems scarier every day that you put it off, but it's something you need to start on to get on track to achieving your goals. Is your procrastination getting in the way of your success?

To overcome procrastination you have to start now! If your goal is to lose 10 pounds, start immediately and do 20 push ups or take a walk around your block, something to get you going. Define a workout and nutrition program and you'll be less likely to delay your actions. You could also commit your goal in writing and post it somewhere you will see it every day–the mirror, the fridge, your computer–as a reminder to get moving. Another way to get you motivated is to establish either a reward for something you finish or a big consequence if you don't complete something by a specified date. For example, if you cheated on your nutrition program and ate dessert three nights in one week, a consequence could be that you will walk or run an extra three miles. Better yet, if you lose the 10 pounds by a certain date, reward yourself by going shopping for a new outfit or pair of running shoes.

To help you take action now, learn about scheduling a day to work on the very things you having been putting off. If you put this off, you are lost for sure!
